Autonomous Undersea Drones, Science After Dark Series, Jan 20

Published on January 5, 2016, by

The Central Coast STEM Collaborative (CCSTEM), will continue its ongoing informal, educational lecture series “Science After Dark” at 6:30pm, January 20th, at Luis Wine Bar in San Luis Obispo. The series is scheduled for the third Wednesday of every month through June, 2016.

This month’s presentation, by Cal Poly scientist Ian Robbins, will focus on the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV’s) to research and monitor activity below the surface of the ocean. AUV’s have a wide range of applications in marine geoscience, and are increasingly being used in the scientific, military, commercial, and policy sectors. Their ability to operate autonomously of a host vessel makes them well suited to exploration of extreme environments, from the world’s deepest hydrothermal vents to beneath polar ice sheets. They have revolutionized our ability to image the seafloor, providing higher resolution seafloor mapping data than can be achieved from surface vessels, particularly in deep water.
