Fueling at Sacramento, California.
The southbound Coast Starlight (left) sits beside an Amtrak San Joaquin.
Looks like many UC Davis students biked to the train station for their Memorial Day trips.
The view back north as we approach Martinez.
How many red lights do you see?
A group of six guides got on board in Oakland and were with the train to Santa Barbara. This is a Park Services program called Trails and Rails through which these guides are coordinated for Amtrak. The local group is the South Coast Railroad Museum in Goleta. They're on the northbound Starlight on Sundays and the southbound Starlight on Mondays during the summer. Most of the informative tidbits to follow were provided by this group of guides.
This plant is making salt by evaporation.
Santa Clara Tower.
CalTrain.
An old sugar beet loader (which is also visible from Highway 101).
Granite Rock. This gravel quarry operation was originally started by the Southern Pacific Railroad, but was bought in 1907 by a private family that still operates it today.
Those are raspberries under the tents.
Elkhorn Slough.
Salinas train station.
There's a model railroad group that has a layout in this old REA building.
As the conductor put it, we had "a slight incident". The loco clipped the bumper off a white pickup truck (hood slightly up and now facing back toward the tracks). He thought he could beat the train through a grade crossing; he was wrong. See below for a picture of the front of the loco.
This old Southern Pacific water tower at Chualar is now privately owned and nicely maintained.
The new Highway 101 is above the old road that used to cross Cuesta Pass.
Stenner Creek Trestle. That's Cal Poly in the background.
Crew change at San Luis Obispo. Note the white scrapes now on the front of the locomotive from the "slight incident" with the white pickup truck.
The nortbound Starlight is on the left, the southbound on the right.
It was a very busy day all along the system.
