August 26-31, 2011 Kansas City/Omaha, UPRR Short Line Workshop August 26-27: Amtrak and Southwest Airlines to Kansas City for a day August 28: UPRR Heritage Fleet Train Ride and Joslyn Art Museum August 29: UPRR Short Line Workshop August 30: Omaha to Burbank by Southwest Airlines August 31: Burbank to San Luis Obispo by Amtrak August 31: Burbank to San Luis Obispo by Amtrak... And the last leg of my journey from Burbank to San Luis Obispo was aboard Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner. From SLO's point of view, this is the "mid-day" train. I was pleasantly surprised at how well kept the interior of these old single-level cars was. And I like having the Cafe on the same level as the coach seating. Several MetroLink trains went by as I waited for my train (which ended up being about 35 minutes late). And FYI, northbound Amtrak trains are on Track 1 and southbounds are on 2, just like MetroLink (although you'd never figure that out by the platform signage). Having the Burbank train station right next to the airport worked out very well. Next time I'll look at using the Marriott if I have to lay over; it's right next door to both trains and planes. The signal guys were there the entire time I was there. After each train went by, they would go look at the track. A freight local came through on a shove with this old Southern Pacific caboose on the point. And finally, Amtrak #799 pulls in, bound for San Luis Obispo.
