Mooch (the Beanie Baby)
Frozen vs Unfrozen

MOOCH

Did you know that there's a Mooch in the Beanie Baby crowd?! Here's what his card says:

Mooch
Date of Birth: August 1, 1998
Look in the treetops, up towards the sky
Swinging from branches way up high
Tempt him with a banana or fruit
When he's hungry, he acts so cute!

Too bad they didn't work "cigar" into the poem somehow!

FROZEN VS UNFROZEN

The summer of 1999 saw Jim Johnson organize a "Frozen vs Unfrozen" cigar taste test to determine if freezing cigars (for beetle protection) leaves any kind of lasting effect that can be tasted. Here's the raw data he collected in a comma-delimited format: DATA.

Of the 40 explicit stabs at whether the cigar was frozen or non-frozen, an even 60% were right.

Depending on what you do with #22, the "rightness" could be 54.5% or 63.6%.

If you take the responders who did not explicitly take a stab at frozen or not, but assume based on their ratings that they would have guessed the better cigars to be unfrozen, then the overall "right rate" is about 56%. The fact that this is lower than the 60% raw data "rightness" reflects the fact (indicated above by Bob Ray) that the frozen cigars actually received higher ratings than the unfrozen ones within an individual taster's group, on the average.

Savanah's Picture - TYRinKC

On New Year's Day, 2000, I found myself the guest of "Rob in KC" at his home. Our family was visiting more family in the Kansas City area, and "Rob in KC" responded to my ASC post looking for any action while I was there.

Thank you "Rob in KC"! It was a splendid afternoon, as only an ASCer can provide. And thanks again to Savanah, Rob's kindergarten niece, who drew the picture at left for me as she quietly worked at the table while Rob and I chatted. She had received quite the Crayola set for Christmas. What a doll! It's a cigar man, she told me.

And thanks, too, Rob for the great smokes you forced into my road warrior. I've gotten them carefully set aside for some special moments.
