Alvin All-Star Railroad (AASRR)

Train Layout (HO) - 10/28/2001

Rolling stock and motive power are nearing the "acquired" stage. With some paint jobs and re-decorating, these will become the Alvin All-Star Railroad (AASRR), a dead-ringer for aspects of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad. These "acquisitions" came from visits to old boxes in the garage, local train stores (most notably Central Coast Trains in Atascadero, CA), and eBay. Under construction (not shown) are a dozen Southern Pacific sugar beet gondolas with extensions (kits from Red Caboose).

Pictured here are a Southern Pacific diesel locomotive (gray and red) and an un-painted GE 70-tonner (gray). Accompanying these two locos are a pair of oil tank cars, a gondola, and two Southern Pacific boxcars.

From front to back on the right side of the picture: A Mikado (2-8-2) steam locomotive (that will need renumbered to No. 21, Hancock's "favorite"), a GP9 "low-nose" (that will need only the SMV yellow markings added), and a GE 70-tonner (that will need re-marked). The rolling stock includes: three organgey boxcars marked Pacific Fruit Express, a Southern Pacific caboose, a black gondola, and a yellow boxcar.

Meanwhile, back at the sugar mill, two more GE-70-tonners are stationed here on the highline, one with a consist of two Southern Pacific gondolas (sugar beet cars without the extensions). And, of course, what AASRR or SMVRR picture set would be complete without a SMVRR yellow caboose! The front end of the Mikado can be seen in the background on the left. When the scenery barrier is erected between the two halves of the platform, you will not be able to see the yard (where the Mikado is sitting) from this vantage point.
