The PB&JRR:
Retaining Wall
October 8, 1893*
We finally decided to level the track in this area by doing a little cut in the hillside. There was enough of a cut to require a functional retaining wall. Dad built the wall out of redwood. Behind the wall (between it and the uphill dirt) is a couple inches of concrete. In that concrete is embedded the heads of nails half-pounded into the backside of the wall, and reebar that goes well down into the ground. The plastic pipes actually go through for drainage.
