Railroad Wineries, San Luis Obispo County
February 22, 2009

PB&J Railroad officials explored two railroad-related wineries in San Luis Obispo County today...

First up was Sylvester Vineyards and Winery, very near the Paso Robles, CA airport. This observation car is ex SLSF 1350 Joseph Pulitzer built by PS in 1948. This car replaced the La Condesa (now in Santa Maria) on the Findlay Fun Tours Train.

La Jolla. Do you get the double entendre of a rock island in the foreground (you can see the edge of it on the left side of the picture; you can see it better in the foreground of the first picture)?...

La Quinta. The two sleepers were Rock Island Railroad. They were built for the Golden Rocket. The Rock Island cars were the only ones built for the train before the order was canceled. The cars ended up as part of the Golden State consist, but continued to carry Golden Rocket on the name boards for many years. When the cars were owned by Finlay Tun Time Tours, they carried the names Elihu C. Redfield (Joseph Pulitzer), Stones River (La Quinta) and Glen Annie (La Jolla). Thanks to agent1522 on TrainOrders for the info.

Next up was Pomar Junction Vineyard, near Templeton, CA (about 15 minutes drive from Sylvester's).

Pomar Junction boasts a Sante Fe boxcar and caboose.

While we did not visit it today, I should mention that the Wine Wrangler is located in the Paso Robles train station building for Amtrak. They'll arrange local transportation, accomodations, wine tours, etc. for train passengers.
