Write the Caption

Tidepool-octopus-Himelblog72Hello Science After Dark Fans!

Dr. Ed Himelblau of Cal Poly gave a very entertaining talk about his experience as an illustrator/cartoonist (in addition to his work in plant genetics and teaching) at our last Science After Dark. His passion is cartoons based on the humor of life in a biology lab.

As promised that night, Ed created a “crowd sourced” illustration based on the criteria established by the audience. You are invited to write the caption! Visit his blog entry for April 23, 2016, contemplate the drawing, and then submit your original caption in the comment section of the blog at www.himelblog.com. Even if you didn’t attend the presentation, you are welcome to submit a caption.

Can We Get Some Volunteers! STEM Expo, May 13-14, Cabrillo High School

Published on April 7, 2016, by

The 2016 31st Annual Central Coast STEM Expo is being held Friday and Saturday, 13-14 May 2016, at Cabrillo High School at 4350 Constellation Road, Lompoc, CA 93436, in the gymnasium and associated patio areas. I am once again looking for volunteers:

FRIDAY:
1:15pm – 6:00pm Set-up/tear down support
5:00pm – 8:00pm Judging support

SATURDAY:
7:30am – 2:30pm Judging support
2:30pm – 5:00pm Set-up and awards placement support
8:00pm – 9:00pm Tear down support

One does not have to have a science, math or engineering degree to volunteer. If you are uncomfortable judging, I have several non-judging duties with varying degrees of involvement. We will be judging 4-10 Grade (mostly 7th grade Middle School) age children’s projects dealing with math and science related subjects. I also have plenty of set-up/ tear down tasks to handle if you do not want to be a judge.

This is a great way to spend a few hours doing some worthy community service work and just having fun with the future leaders of our community! We always get some pizza Friday night and on Saturday for the volunteers and have a lot of fun working as a team. I’ve had a lot of previous volunteers say how rewarding the experience had been!

If interested please contact ann.card@us.af.mil or call her at 805-606-9477. Please provide her with your work address and work phone number as well as days/times you can commit. I always like to follow-up after the event with a letter of appreciation. Please pass on to anyone you think would have an interest in helping out.

Thank you!

Tom Stevens
