“A Changing Bay: The Dynamic Waters of the Morro Bay Estuary”

What will Morro Bay look like in 25 years? 50 years? 100 years? Your lifetime? My lifetime?  Many of us all think of our lifetimes, our futures, in terms of possibilities and choices. We might also consider the impact of processes we can’t control, like aging, the economy, and our genetic dispositions. We can consider Morro Bay through a similar lens. The choices we make as a community, and even as a species will have profound impacts on the bay, as will nature taking its course. Morro Bay National Estuary Program Executive Director Lexie Bell explores these ideas in her talk entitled, “A Changing Bay: The Story of Eelgrass, Earth, and the Dynamic Waters of the Morro Bay Estuary.”

Click here for Saturday Scientists: “Aquatic Insects Up Close,” April 15, 2017 at 2pm. Do you know what insects live in our streams? Have you ever seen a mayfly larva? How about a stonefly larva or a caddisfly larva? Surprise! NONE of them look like a fly! Discover where these unique insects live, how they grow in the water, and what they tell us about the health of creek waters that feed into the Morro Bay estuary. You will also learn how to use the binocular microscopes to see these insects more clearly. Admission to the workshop is free.

Everyone knows about them—but have you ever looked at them up close? Do you know what’s actually inside a seed? Do you know how seeds grow? Come hear about them and look at them through the dissecting microscopes. Find out some surprising facts—all about seeds.

The Central Coast STEM Collaborative (CCSTEM), will continue its ongoing informal, educational lecture series “Science After Dark” at 6:30pm, March 21st, at Luis Wine Bar in San Luis Obispo. The series is scheduled for the third Tuesday of every month through May 2017.

Elephant seals were considered extinct at the end of the 19th century, having been hunted out. Eventually, a small colony was discovered on an island off the coast of Mexico. All northern elephant seals are considered to be descendants of that small colony. They are popular for scientific study because they are hard to watch, spending eight to ten months a year basically under water, and much is still to be learned.

Science After Dark is fortunate to have two highly qualified speakers for this presentation: David L. Bauer and Diana Blake Barnhart. David L. Bauer is a retired chemist/environmental scientist, docent and President of Friends of the Elephant Seal. Diana Blake Barnhart, retired teacher, and docent with Friends of the Elephant Seal, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cal Poly in Biological Sciences.
